Jersey Shore fans are reminiscing on an old scene from the original series where Pauly D did not have his infamous blowout hairstyle full of hair gel. As they laugh at the awkward photos from the episode, the longtime viewers are comparing Pauly to other celebrities they think he looks like without his hair gel.
Pauly D's signature hairstyle was one of the reasons that Jersey Shore became such an instant pop culture phenomenon when it started in 2009. Similar to how girls would mimic Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi's infamous "poof" hairstyle, many guys attempted to recreate Pauly's blowout style back in the day as well. For that reason, Pauly D has had the same hairstyle since the start of the show. Now, 12 years later, Pauly even has his own hair gel line which also includes his own hairspray.
During the original Jersey Shore series, Pauly D gave the fans a rare look at what he looked like without him wearing so much hair gel. The scene was allegedly taken from the outtakes that were only featured on the original DVDs. The photos from the scene have resurfaced on Reddit, leaving fans both laughing and comparing him to other celebrities that he kind of looks like. In this particular scene on Jersey Shore, Pauly D compared himself to pop singer Justin Bieber. With that said, one Reddit user compared Pauly to the Belarusian-Norwegian musician Alexander Rybak, to which others agreed. Another comment said that Pauly looked like someone in the music video for MGMT's song "The Youth". Even though it was not a comparison to another celebrity, one user joked that this new look was Pauly D's alter ego, a guy named "Paul."
As for whether or not fans actually like Pauly D without his infamous blowout, the opinions were torn. Some think Pauly actually looks better with his hair natural, making him look more "normal." One comment read, "He looks even hotter without the hair gel." In agreeance with this statement, one user feels it's time for Pauly to retire his blowout and immense amounts of hair gel. They wrote, "He looks like a regular human being here, not a cartoon character like he does normally." On the other hand, many fans wish that they had never seen these photos because of how strangely different Pauly looked in them. One person joked that looking at the photos of Pauly without hair gel in his hair felt "illegal" because of how iconic his look is.
This exclusive Jersey Shore scene was one of the only times fans have ever seen Pauly without his hair gel and signature blowout hairstyle. Since his rise to fame 12 years ago, Pauly has only changed his hairstyle one other time, which was actually pretty recently. He shocked fans back in December 2020 when he debuted a platinum blonde look. Pauly eventually let the blonde grow out and is now back to his original, iconic look. The new look is said to be seen on the new season of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation.
