James Gunn Has Spoken With DC For A Future Project | Screen Rant

The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn has confirmed that he has spoken with DC and Warner Bros. for a new project set in the DC Extended Universe. The filmmaker previously made his blockbuster debut as writer and director for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Guardians of the Galaxy films, of which he is gearing up to return to close out the trilogy after briefly being dismissed. Following the split, WB quickly swept up Gunn for their comic book franchise, offering him any project he desired including a new Superman film, though the filmmaker elected to tackle the criminal team-up instead.

Gunn's The Suicide Squad acts as a stand-alone follow-up to David Ayer's similarly-titled 2016 film, with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag all returning. The filmmaker is already expanding his footprint in the DCEU with the HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker centered on John Cena's titular hero and his origins prior to the film. With Gunn already stating a likelihood that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be his final MCU film, it looks like he may keep the ball rolling at WB.

One fan took to Twitter to pose a question to Gunn about whether he has spoken with WB and DC for another project set in their universe after The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Though he couldn't give a tease as to what, Gunn did confirm there have been discussions amongst the three for him to return. The writer/director has previously teased the possibility of continuing his work in the DCEU.

As exciting a notion as it is, Gunn's confirmation of talks with the studio likely won't come as much of a surprise to many. Though he is preparing to return to Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the House of Mouse's studio has been more lenient on his schedule and writing, much of Gunn's recent discussions about the prior films and the superhero genre as a whole do seem to point towards a lack of interest on his part to continue with the MCU. This could stem from some lingering bad blood regarding his dismissal or a simple desire to shake things up for his own creative purposes.

Whatever the case may be, Gunn's time in the DCEU already seems to be getting off to a great start with The Suicide Squad as early reactions have showered praise upon the film. Given Peacemaker was also written entirely by the filmmaker and primarily helmed by him, chances are the HBO Max series will reach the same heights as its predecessor. Only time will tell when the film hits theaters on August 5 and the series premieres in January 2022.
