How Marvel’s What If Changes Peggy Carter’s Character

Head writer of What If…?, A.C. Bradley, explains how the series changes Peggy Carter’s character. Following Loki’s dramatic effect on the Multiverse, Marvel Studios’ animated Disney+ series is narrated by Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), a being tasked with watching over the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Based on the comic series of the same name, What If..? answers its titular question by exploring alternative versions of key events and characters from the Sacred Timeline.

This will include T’Challa (voiced by the late Chadwick Boseman) being abducted by Yondu (Michael Rooker) instead of Peter Quill and becoming Star-Lord, and Margaret Elizabeth “Peggy” Carter (Hayley Atwell) taking the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers at the start of World War II. Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, has said the series will feature a majority of characters from all of the 23 movies voiced by an impressive roster of MCU actors. What If…?’s pilot episode—which premieres on August 11th—will explore the story of Peggy “Captain” Cater, who’s inspired by Captain Britain from the comics.

In a Screen Rant exclusive interview, Bradley talked about how the character of Peggy Carter will be different in What If…?. The head writer explained that to recreate the character, she needed to be deconstructed. Read what she had to say below:

“I feel like it was a real education of how to write an iconic character. How to take them apart, deconstruct them, find out what makes them tick, and then find new ways to tell the story. I'm a big sucker for an underdog and, at times, that's what Peggy Carter is. She's the woman who was not supposed to be in the room. She's the woman who is supposed to be on the sidelines, pining for Steve Rogers. And we're like, "No. We're gonna show a woman who knows her worth, and see how that changes the world."

In the MCU’s Scared Timeline, not only is Peggy one of the most prominent agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but one of the organization’s founders. Her with the SSR, saving Abraham Erskine from Johann Schmidt, is what leads to Steve Rogers becoming Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger. Even without the Super Soldier Serum, Steve will play a part in What If…?, although the character won’t be voiced by Chris Evans. In promotional material, the scrawny Steve is seen piloting an Iron Man-like suit (presumably made by Howard Stark). It’ll be interesting to witness Peggy and Steve’s new dynamic as well as the former’s effect on the universe now that she’s a metahuman.

Captain Cater has been confirmed to appear in the second season of What…If? Bradley and company have discussed how Peggy would be a character they revisit every season. While the series will adhere to a quasi-anthology format, there will be an overarching story that ties into the larger MCU. That said, everything is considered canon. Peggy Carter, Uatu the Watcher, T’Challa’s Star-Lord, Zombie Hunter Spider-Man, an evil Doctor Strange, and many more are about to change everything.
