Hayley Atwell has shared an image of herself and Tom Cruise filming a car stunt for Mission: Impossible 7 . Best known for her role as Peggy Carter (and most recently Captain Carter in What If...?) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Atwell will star in director Christopher McQuarrie’s seventh and eighth installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise. The two films will see Cruise reprise his role as Ethan Hunt, with Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Vanessa Kirby all returning as well. Aside from Atwell, newcomers to the franchise include Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Rob Delaney, Charles Parnell, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, Cary Elwes, and Esai Morales.
Details surrounding the plot of Mission: Impossible 7 have largely been kept under wraps, and so have details about Atwell’s character. Production for the film was delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Paramount pushing back the release of the eighth film by a year. These hiccups have led to changes in the cast as well, with Morales replacing Nicholas Hoult as the film’s villain, and Angela Bassett being unable to reprise her role as CIA Director Erika Sloane due to scheduling conflicts. However, none of these changes are expected to get in the way of the franchise’s reputation for delivering increasingly bold and impressive stunts, performed on everything from trains to planes, cars and motorcycles.
Atwell recently shared a behind-the-scenes photo on her Instagram account that shows herself and Cruise smiling together in a stunt vehicle between takes. The picture was taken by director Christopher McQuarrie. Based on the actors' costumes in the image, the stunt looks as if it could be from the same scene that Atwell and Cruise were thought to be shooting in Rome last year. That footage appeared to show a car crash following the end of a chase, with Cruise rushing to pull Atwell's character from a smoking vehicle. Check out Atwell's latest post below.

Some of the franchise’s most entertaining scenes have featured Cruise behind the wheel of a car. While viewers were impressed by Cruise’s ability to hold onto a plane as it took off (or his breath for a seemingly impossible amount of time) in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, the film's Casablanca car chase with Simon Pegg’s character was equally thrilling to fans. Whatever scene the pair are filming in this photo, however, it is likely not as dramatic as recent teases of a massive train sequence set to appear in Mission: Impossible 7.
The post from Atwell seems to tease that her character will be riding shotgun as one of the franchise’s new leads. And if her intense physical training over the past few months is any indication, Atwell is taking her role in Mission: Impossible 7 very seriously. Whether her character will prove a new star in the future of the Mission: Impossible saga will be revealed when Mission: Impossible 7 is released on November 19, 2021.
