Sylvester Stallone Shares Rare Rocky 4 Image with Dolph Lundgren

Sylvester Stallone has shared a new rare Rocky IV image with Dolph Lundgren, aka Ivan Drago. Stallone is best known for playing the underdog boxer Rocky Balboa, as it’s the role that catapulted him to Hollywood superstardom in 1976. Out of the six Rocky films, Rocky IV remains the biggest box office hit and arguably one of the most popular installments due to it featuring countless quotable dialogues and classic training montages. The film told the story of Rocky challenging Ivan Drago to a boxing match in Russia after the Russian killed Apollo Creed in the ring. Not only did this story serve as inspiration for Creed 2 in 2018, but Rocky IV will now get its own director’s cut this November.

Stallone is very active on social media, constantly sharing updates on future projects, and it was last summer that he announced he was working on a director’s cut of Rocky IV. Stallone has shared insights and snippets into how the director's cut differs from the theatrical version, a prime example being it removing Paulie's infamous robot. After completing the director's cut this past April, the actor/director also announced that the Rocky IV director's cut hits theaters on November 11, 2021. Now, Stallone continues to build fan excitement for the project with a rare Rocky IV photo.

On Instagram, Stallone shared a “very rare photo” from Rocky IV that he’s “never seen” before. The grainy image shows Stallone in Rocky’s iconic USA shorts facing off against Dolph Lundgren, who’s wearing Drago’s famous red shorts, as the pair look like they are stood in front of a green screen. In addition to this, the Hollywood legend mentions that he has seen the new trailer for the director’s cut, calling it “amazing.” According to Sly, Drago and Rocky’s battle, with the new footage, “is extraordinary.” Full post can be seen below:

Rocky fans will no doubt appreciate the rare photo of Stallone and Lundgren. Not only is it one that the Rocky creator has never seen, but the grainy quality does make it feel like, as Stallone writes, an “old fight poster from 100 years ago.” Intelligently, Stallone provides a dose of nostalgia with the image. However, he also builds excitement for the upcoming director’s cut by promoting the new trailer, as well as praising the new version of the classic 1985 film. One would imagine a trailer will be released soon, as we edge closer to November 11, and fans will then be able to get their first taste of the cut Stallone has described as “deeper and better.”

Stallone appears to be done playing the Rocky character as he will not be returning for Creed 3. Although, that hasn’t stopped him from revisiting his iconic character in other ways, as he also shared his idea for Rocky prequel TV show. Time will tell if that ever becomes a reality. But one thing Rocky fans do know is Rocky Vs. Drago – The Ultimate Director’s Cut is fast approaching, and while they wait, Stallone is providing them with some rare photos to remind them of Rocky IV’s iconic battle.
