The Boys Spinoff Show Is Exciting In A Perverted Marvel Way Says Creator

The Boys series creator Eric Kripke offers an update on development of its spinoff show and calling it exciting in a "perverted Marvel" fashion. Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's graphic novels of the same name, the story is set in a world in which superpowered individuals exist but abuse their abilities while parading as heroes to the public. The Boys specifically focuses on Hughie Campbell, a young man whose girlfriend is killed by one of the members of the superhero group known as The Seven, as he is recruited by the titular vigilante team who seek to bring the corrupt truths of the "Supes" and their financing conglomerate Vought International to light.

The series features an ensemble cast including Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, Erin Moriarty, Dominique McElligott, Chace Crawford, Jessie T. Usher and Nathan Mitchell, The Boys has been a smash hit for Amazon since debuting in 2019, scoring rave reviews across its two seasons and becoming the first non-Netflix show to appear on the Nielsen Top 10 Streaming Shows list with season 2. Amazon is already looking to keep this success rolling as season 3 is currently in production and set to conclude in September while a spinoff series is currently in the works and new word is finally coming to light for the latter.

As production continues on season 3 of the mainline series, Kripke caught up with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss The Boys franchise and its upcoming spinoff. In addition to confirming that the latter is still in its writing stages, Kripke confirmed it's moving at a steady pace and expressed excitement over the show's difference in tone from the mainline series, comparing it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. See what Krikpe said below:

"We’re writing furiously. I think it’s coming along really great. It’s exciting in that sort of perverted Marvel way — in the way that different Marvel projects are very different: One’s a thriller, one’s a comedy. This feels like that, too, but with a ton more dick jokes."

Going all the way back to its source material, The Boys has frequently been celebrated by critics and fans alike for its satirical approach to the superhero genre. The series more specifically has earned acclaim for updating the material to take aim at the cultural obsession with superhero properties in recent times, most notably that of Disney's MCU and Warner Bros.' DC Extended Universe. With the spinoff series already being set at a superhero college and exploring the "hormonal, competitive Supes" with an R-rated approach, many believed the tone would stay in line with the mainline show.

Kripke's recent confirmations that The Boys spinoff series will explore the G-Men, a parody of the X-Men, taking a "perverted Marvel" approach to the new show sounds like the proper approach. With the show having also been described as part college series and part Hunger Games, Kripke's tease of a shift in tone does create a point of curiosity as to just what kind of tone audiences can expect from the spinoff. In the meantime, audiences can revisit the first two seasons of The Boys on Amazon Prime now while they anxiously await the arrival of season 3.
