COD: Black Ops Cold War Is Adding Nuke Scorestreak To Multiplayer

Treyarch Studios recently announced that the upcoming update for  Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will include a new, hard-to-obtain ability for players to take advantage of in most multiplayer modes. This new ability is the Nuke scorestreak and will allow those who earn it to take out entire maps in a single moment. This superpowered scorestreak is launching alongside several other notable new features for Call of Duty thanks to a mid-season update.

Black Ops Cold War is the seventeenth official entry in the massively successful Call of Duty franchise and follows 2019's Modern Warfare reboot, a game that many fans praised as a return to form. Just like that game, Black Ops Cold War has received heaps of new content, both free and paid, since its initial release in late 2020. These multitudinous updates have introduced players to new weapons, skills, gear, and skins for use in the game's multiplayer matches. Most of these new additions have been of the cosmetic variety, but some, including the subject of this article, have offered meaningful gameplay changes.

On July 13, Treyarch announced the patch notes for Season Four's upcoming July 15 update. Amongst the host of new weapon skins and Zombies maps was the inclusion of a new Scorestreak ability: the Nuke. Previously only available as a secret ability in the Hardpoint multiplayer mode, this Scorestreak bonus will let players unleash a weapon of mass destruction upon their competitors upon earning thirty kills without dying. While this update expands the integration of this Scorestreak to most other standard game modes, other modes such as CDL (Call of Duty League) and party games like Gun Game will not feature this new ability.

Treyarch was quick to add some clarification to the initial announcement of the patch notes, stating that the Nuke scorestreak will not immediately end the match as some fans may have suspected, especially considering some of Black Ops Cold War's other overpowered inclusions. It's reasonable to assume that some would expect the ability to be an instant game clincher with a title as rousing as "Nuke", so the clarification was likely necessary for those unfamiliar with the previously secret Scorestreak. Taking this disclaimer into account, the new scorestreak can be seen as slightly less oppressive.

While this upcoming addition may not be the instant match-winner some fans were expecting, it will still act as a major ace up the sleeve of any player skilled (or lucky) enough to get their hands on it. Incentives like scorestreaks can serve as addicting and gratifying additions to any multiplayer experience, so one that threatens to instantly take out all other players is sure to make matches more competitive. Hopefully, Black Ops Cold War will manage to stay balanced with the introduction of this tremendously powerful gameplay booster.
