WandaVision Secretly Predicted Spider-Man: No Way Home's Trailer Release Date

Marvel is notable for including Easter eggs for fans in connection to upcoming films, with the Disney+ WandaVision series including a subtle prediction for Spider-Man: No Way Home’s long-anticipated release date. Kicking off MCU Phase 4, WandaVision premiered as a limited series that followed Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch as she grieved the death of the love of her life, Vision, from Avengers: Infinity War. Aside from a few cameos by MCU characters like Captain Marvel’s Monica Rambeau and Thor’s Darcy Lewis, WandaVision was primarily contained to the experience of Wanda and Vision.

Following the 2017 release of Spider-Man: Far From Home after Peter Parker’s emotional experience with Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, MCU fans have been eagerly waiting for more information on the new Spider-Man trilogy’s finale, Spider-Man: No Way Home. After months of rumors about whether former Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would return for the new installment as Peter Parkers in the multiverse, fans’ prayers have finally been answered. Although a controversial minute-long leak of the No Way Home trailer was released on August 22, Marvel wasn’t actually scrambling to release the full trailer the next day - August 23 was the original plan all along, as supported by a clue in WandaVision.

In WandaVision’s premiere episode, “Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience,” a 1950s sitcom version of Wanda and Vision repeatedly stare at a calendar on their wall with the date August 23 marked with a heart. The significance of the marked date within the WandaVision episode was to remind themselves of their dinner plans with the Harts, but it may have actually been a sign of hope for the eager Spider-Man fans. With the Disney+ WandaVision and Loki series both setting precursors for messing with the multiverse around the same time, it’s not impossible that the WandaVision post-credits scene was also hinting at Wanda being involved in Stephen Strange’s timeline travel spell gone wrong.

It’s possible that the WandaVision significance of August 23 was just a coincidence, but with the powers that be at Marvel, it seems Kevin Feige was giving a taste of what was to come in Phase 4 - especially since Doctor Strange was also originally supposed to have a cameo in WandaVision. The revelation of WandaVision teasing No Way Home’s trailer release has also led to more theories about how many of the Avengers will reunite in Phase 4, and what the multiverse mayhem means for Doctor Strange’s upcoming 2022 movie. Wanda is expected to return for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness following her own spell-casting WandaVision post-credits scene, though No Way Home may give a glimpse of the Scarlet Witch in the latter’s post-credits, which would explain why WandaVision held the release date prediction.

The introduction of a multiverse for Spider-Man: No Way Home has been predicted since Sony’s 2018 animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which has led many to believe a live-action version of Miles Morales will make its way into the upcoming film. With WandaVision giving a hint to the trailer release, audiences will have to keep a close eye on the background details in MCU projects to see what other hints lay in store. The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer also gives an official release date for the movie as December 17, 2021, where it will receive an exclusive theatrical release.
