Adam Scott Thinks Step Brothers Would Be A Great Podcast

Adam Scott thinks that Step Brothers would make for a great podcast. The lauded actor has a glittering resume of film and television projects, from Knocked Up and The Aviator to Party Down and, perhaps most notably, Parks and Recreation. Scott's turn in the 2008 movie Step Brothers is another cherished performance, as he flexed his comedic chops alongside heavy-hitters like Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly and Kathryn Hahn. Scott plays Ferrell's character's younger, more successful brother in the film, starring in some of the movie's most memorable scenes, including crooning "Sweet Child O' Mine" with his onscreen wife Hahn.

In more recent years, Scott has shone in high-profile projects like HBO's acclaimed miniseries Big Little Lies and the forthcoming Apple TV+ show Severance. His latest turn is both starring in and producing Cadence 13's podcast movie Ghostwriter, about a writer who takes on a project about a mysterious killer, opposite Kate Mara. Once again tapping into his more villainous side, Scott plays enigmatic billionaire James Webber.

Discussing the revolutionary new podcast movie genre, Scott reveals what other projects from his past could come back in podcast form. While speaking with The Art of Kindness with Robert Peterpaul podcast, both Mara and Scott ponder which of their projects could work in the medium. Ultimately, Scott says he could see "the audio version of Step Brothers" being a great listen. Check out Scott's full quote below:

I wonder if- like, spontaneity or the illusion of spontaneity is so important in comedy, I feel like that could be hard to pull off... Unless it's like, I've been on a lot of comedy podcasts but you're just like f**king around and improvising, and that works, but like a scripted comedy, I wonder if that would be weird. Maybe it would be great... Just like anything, it would have to be really well-written, because it's a really hard needle to thread. [...] Maybe the audio version of Step Brothers...

The audience for Step Brothers has only grown over the years. In a recent interview, director Adam McKay named it his most prescient film, saying that while the movie was cartoonish when it premiered, its depiction of man-children rings true in an age of mask-induced temper tantrums. He also said that if the movie took place today, the two characters would be deep into the QAnon conspiracy theories that have proliferated in recent years.

Clearly, releasing a Step Brothers audio experience could be podcast-movie magic. Setting it in modern day and then tweaking the screenplay to both fit the times and the new medium might provide for a fun product. The toughest part would be wrangling the original all-star players back together, especially since McKay and Ferrell haven't spoken since 2019. Of course, a benefit to working in the podcast space is that actors don't have to be in the same place at the same time to record. Hahn and Scott could be belting "Sweet Child O' Mine" from miles apart.
