The best Ghost-type Pokémon can make or break competitive teams in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl because of their strategic gameplay. Ghost-type Pokémon also are one of the biggest threats to Psychic-type Pokémon, exploiting their typically lower defenses. While many Ghost-type Pokémon may not be the first choice for competitive teams, there are a few Pokémon players who might want to consider including in their party.
Ghost-type Pokémon are offensive threats primarily because of their ability to use many different kinds of status-afflicting moves and moves that deal increased damage after an opponent has a status effect. Additionally, pure Ghost-type Pokémon only have weaknesses in BDSP to other Ghost-types, as well as Dark-type Pokémon. Ghost-type Pokémon also have resistance to Poison and Bug-type attacks and immunities from Normal and Fighting-type attacks.
The best competitive Ghost-type Pokémon available in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are Dusknoir, Gengar, Froslass, and Rotom's default form. Ghost-type Pokémon are at their best when they have Will-O-Wisp and Hex in almost all circumstances. Will-O-Wisp applies a burn status effect to a target, taking 1/16th of the opponent's health every turn. Hex doubles its power when used on an opponent with a status effect and receives a further damage bonus thanks to the STAB benefit. While Gengar and Dusknoir tend to fall into more traditional offensive roles, both Froslass and Rotom can use Trick to swap their items with an opponent. This can force opponents to be stuck with an unwanted item, like the Choice Scarf item that forces opponents to repeat the first move they used in battle.

The best Gengar stats and items include:
- Ability: Cursed Body
- Nature: Timid
- Moves: Hex/Thunderbolt/Focus Blast/Sludge Bomb
- Held Item: Life Orb can be obtained in Pokémon BDSP's Battle Tower exchange
