Big Mushrooms are one of the Valuable Items that trainers can find throughout the Sinnoh region in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. Like other Valuable Items, Big Mushrooms can be sold in shops for high prices and are a great way for trainers to earn PokéDollars as they progress through the game. There are a total of 9 Big Mushrooms that can be found while exploring, but trainers can get more with specific Pokémon.
Big Mushrooms sell for 2,500 PokéDollars at PokéMarts, which can be found in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl’s major cities and towns. While previous games have included Maniac Vendors who would buy Valuable Items for twice the price, they hadn’t been introduced in the original Diamond & Pearl of Gen IV, so they’re absent from Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl as well. Big Mushrooms have no other use aside from making money, and players can take them straight to the PokéMarts to make some extra cash.
Most Big Mushrooms in the game are hidden, often underneath rocks or boulders, but players can use the Dowsing Machine app on the Pokétch to help them pinpoint the item’s location and pick it up. The Dowsing Machine app can be acquired from Lucas or Dawn after trainers get the Explorer Kit and defeat Gardenia in the Eterna Gym. They’ll meet the player at the end of the Cycling Road where it connects with Route 207 and ask them to pick a hand, but regardless of which hand the player picks, they’ll receive the Dowsing Machine app as well as the Vs. Seeker. By touching the screen of the Pokétch while using the Dowsing Machine app, players can reveal the locations of hidden items relative to their location.

- There’s a Big Mushroom just south of the entrance to Sunyshore City from Route 222. By breaking the rock next to the fisherman on the east side of the beach, players can surf on the water past the rocks in front of the staircase. The Big Mushroom is in a patch of grass just north of the water.
- After defeating the Elite 4 and obtaining the National Dex, players can explore Route 226 just east of the Survival Area. Just before the double battle with the Dragon Tamer and Bird Keeper, there’s a rocky wall that can be climbed. Following the path will lead to a large grassy patch where a Big Mushroom is hidden in the top northwestern corner.
- On the far east side of Route 229, players will find a pond past a cuttable tree and a Poké Ball containing a bottle of Protein. Surfing to the other end of this pond will lead to a small patch of land where a Big Mushroom is hidden.
- There are several treasures waiting for players in the final room of Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl's Solaceon Ruins, but the Big Mushroom is hidden under a rock in one of the side rooms that can be accessed from two floors above the treasure room. Players can find it by taking the top right staircase at the Ruins’ entrance, followed by the bottom left staircase, then the top right staircase past the Ruin Maniac, then the top left staircase, and finally the bottom right staircase.
- Mt. Coronet has not one, but two Big Mushrooms hidden on its snowy peak. Players can get to the top of Mt. Coronet by entering through the Route 208 entrance and using the Hidden Move Rock Climb on the cliff just to the north and making their way through several caves. The first can be found hidden under a rock on the northernmost cliff of Mt. Coronet’s fourth floor where two rocky walls can be climbed just as the player exits the mountain. The second can be found by entering the cave at the top of the hill in the southwest of this same area and climbing two sets of stairs to the south. There’s another rock all the way to the right of this cliff, where the Big Mushroom is hidden.
- As players make their way to face Cynthia and the Pokémon League, they can find the Big Mushroom on Victory Road in the basement floor with plenty of water for players to Surf on. After beating the Dragon Tamer past the top of the waterfall, players can follow the path down to find several rocks around a set of stairs leading up. The rock to the far right just below the cliff has a Big Mushroom hidden underneath.
- Big Mushrooms aren’t limited to Sinnoh’s overworld as one of these rare treasures can be found in the Grand Underground as well. By dropping into Sinnoh’s subterranean tunnels from the entrance of the Iron Islands, players can quickly find a large Still-Water Cavern to the southwest with a Big Mushroom inside. To the northeast of this cave, there’s a group of three smaller caves, and the Riverbank Cave on the far right side also has a Big Mushroom. The Iron Islands can be accessed by boat from Canalave City, but this area of the Grand Underground is the largest and can be accessed from many different areas throughout Sinnoh if players haven’t gotten to Canalave City yet.

In addition to finding Big Mushrooms throughout the Sinnoh region, players also have a chance to find one by catching Pokémon that are holding them in the wild. Wild Paras and Shroomish both have a 5% chance of holding a Big Mushroom when caught, but these Pokémon won’t be available until trainers have completed their Sinnoh Dex and claimed their National Dex from Professor Oak. Paras can be caught in Grassland Caves, Swampy Caves, Sunlit Caverns, and Bogsunk Caverns in the Grand Underground, and Shroomish can be found in the Great Marsh in Pastoria City.
Trainers can also get Big Mushrooms if they have a Pokémon with the Pickup ability that’s under level 30. Pachirisu, Aipom, and Munchlax can all have this ability, but Pachirisu are by far the easiest to catch in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl and can be found on Route 205, outside the Valley Windworks, and near the Fuego Ironworks. They can also be caught in the Grand Underground’s Spacious Caves and Whiteout Caves. Aipom and Munchlax can be caught in the Grand Underground as well, but Munchlax is a rare spawn, making it tougher to find and catch. Unlike Munchlax, Ambipom will retain its Pickup ability when it evolves, but it will only evolve after learning Double Hit at level 32, at which point the Pokémon will no longer pick up Big Mushrooms.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are available now on Nintendo Switch.
