The first clip for The Matrix Resurrections has Neo looking back at his past. Keanu Reeves returns as Neo in the fourth film in The Matrix franchise, which takes place many years after the last film in the series, The Matrix Revolutions. Also returning to the franchise is Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, who plays a pivotal role in Neo's journey as the woman he fell in love with in the original trilogy. The duo are reunited in The Matrix Resurrections, but how that comes to be after the events of the last film are unclear.
Lana Wachowski returns to direct the new entry in The Matrix franchise, which does more than just reunite Neo and Trinity. The film also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus (a role originally played by Laurence Fishburne), while newcomers to the cast include Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jessica Henwick, and Christina Ricci. The film is slated to open theatrically and on HBO Max on December 22.
Warner Bros has released the first clip from The Matrix Resurrections, which features Neo being led through a doorway by Henwick's Bugs. The doorway opens up to a train and then returns him to a familiar-looking room where he first met Morpheus in 1999's The Matrix. The method of travel in the clip is referred to as a "moving portal," which leads neo down a pathway of his past, seeing familiar faces (including his own) from the previous films, before meeting up with Abdul-Mateen II's Morpheus. It's hinted that the "first contact" with Neo went badly and a better solution was to implement elements from his past to "help ease" him into the present. Take a look at the clip below:

Seeing Fishburne in the clip, as well as the younger versions of Neo and Trinity makes for some interesting theories as to why and how those characters are back. Much of The Matrix Resurrections story has been kept under wraps, although some details have spilled in terms of the inspiration for returning to The Matrix. Director Wachowski has been vocally against returning to the franchise in the past, but she was eventually pulled back into the world of The Matrix, seeking to tell a love story that centers on both Neo and Trinity, while bringing the franchise to life in a new way.
The use of "moving portals" was not a technology utilized in the original trilogy, so this new clip makes it clear that The Matrix Resurrections won't be simply using all the old tricks that the original trilogy did. Trailers have seen Neo having "Force-like" abilities as well, with the abilities to push, throw and re-direct objects seemingly with the power of his mind. New tech has also been teased with some characters wearing rigs while seemingly inside The Matrix, which may or may not have something to do with the aforementioned moving portals. From any vantage point, it appears that The Matrix Resurrections has far more up its sleeve than just nostalgic repurposing, which should make it more than just a formulaic revisit and possibly something as amazing as the original film.
