In the first act of Inscryption, players are drawn into game-master Leshy's twisted card game, which requires them to make choices and sacrifices to build their deck and advance through his brutal campaign. Players can pick up various items throughout the game to help them in battle, but there's one item in particular that players are told about that has no use. This item, only referred to as "Failure" in the rulebook, can't be used in battle, but players should still try to take it when they have the chance.
The Failure Bottle contains a glowing green goo with a drooping face that players can pick up when they reach a Backpack on the game map. If they don't already have three items when they find a Backpack, they can choose items to take with them until they have three in their inventory. When players come across the mysterious Failure Bottle in the first act, Leshy will say that they can't use it, and the entry in the rulebook also describes this item as having no use to the player and says nothing more about it.
However, the Failure Bottle does have a use, but players won't be able to discover it until they attempt to use it in battle. Once they do, Leshy will take it away from them, insisting that it's completely useless and advising that they avoid it. Finally, he will put it on the shelf by the door, and players can get up from the table and interact with it once the battle is over.

To beat the first act of Inscryption, players must solve escape room puzzles and discover clues and items hidden throughout Leshy's cabin, and the Failure Bottle can come in very handy when players are stuck. For the most part, the Failure Bottle will just complain about its unbearable agony when players talk to it, but it also gives several helpful hints about the puzzles in the cabin and how to solve them. Not only that, but once players have gathered everything they need to defeat Leshy for good, the Failure Bottle will give them clues about how to pull it all off in the end. Fortunately, players only need to obtain it once as it will remain in the cabin even after players die.
Players can also unlock more dialogue with the Failure Bottle by using the Dagger, another of Inscryption's items that can uncover more hints around the cabin. By using the Dagger to take out their eye, players can tip the weight of the scale by four points in battle, which can secure a victory or flip a battle in their favor. Once they do, Leshy will offer them a replacement eye from a box, one of which is notably different from the rest as it has glowing runes and markings. This eye is the eye of Magnificus, and it reveals splotches of paint that had previously been invisible throughout the cabin, giving players hints about how to end Leshy's game once and for all. However, speaking to the Failure Bottle again once players have the eye of Magnificus will unlock a new conversation with it that alludes to events yet to come in Act II of Inscryption and reveals a bit about what this green goo is—or was.
Inscryption is available now on PC.
