Dexter: Where Does Kurt Hide The Bodies In New Blood?

Warning: Contains spoilers for Dexter: New Blood episode 5.

Kurt’s serial killer MO has been shown in detail in Dexter: New Blood, but one detail that hasn’t been revealed is where he hides the bodies. Kurt Caldwell has clearly been killing people for a long time and has got his method largely down to an art form, the unexpected resistance shown by Chloe (Skylar Wright) excepted. Therefore, he must have been dumping bodies for a long time, but precisely where Dexter: New Blood’s serial killer hides them remains a mystery.

Dexter: New Blood episode 3, “Smoke Signals,” showed that Kurt shoots his victims and then drains their blood while preserving the bodies with formaldehyde. In the same episode, a lot of attention is given to where Dexter can safely dispose of Matt Caldwell’s body now that the police are sniffing around. There are several places that he considers (while being lightly mocked by his imaginary version of Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), but ultimately settles on burning the bodies. With this context, it is strange that Kurt’s body disposal method is not more closely examined.

While the location where Kurt hides the bodies of his victims hasn’t been explicitly stated, in retrospect, clues for Dexter: New Blood episode 3 make it fairly clear. When on the phone with Angela about the search for Matt Caldwell, she tells him that they’re planning on expanding the search out over the next three days, first to Clarke Mountains, then the quarry, and finally the caves. Kurt seems concerned at this, responding with, “The caves? You think he’s that far out?” He curses when he hangs up the phone, and later in the same episode, he claims that Matt has Facetimed him and has the search called off. From this, the viewer can figure out that Kurt Caldwell almost certainly dumps the bodies from his killings in the cave system north of Iron Lake and had the search called off to stop the bodies of his many victims from being discovered.

If Kurt Caldwell is dumping the bodies in a cave system, it would also go some way to explaining his post-kill ritual. While the fact that Kurt drains the blood and preserves the bodies in Dexter: New Blood is a fun call back to Dexter season 1, where Brian Moser, the Ice Truck Killer, drained his victims of blood, the new reason has remained unexplained in the new series. If he has drained the blood, then the bodies would be less likely to attract scavengers who might drag the body parts to somewhere more discoverable and rumble the fact that his victims are dying and not simply runaways. It’s unclear what he does with the blood once it is drained, however that is easier to dispose of down a drain as long as no one is looking for it.

Kurt’s decision to hide the body parts out in the caves is interesting as it mimics Dexter’s own plans that take place in the same episode that provides these clues. In Dexter: New Blood episode 3, Dexter considers dumping the bodies in the old iron mine. According to the maps shown, the mine is in the Clark Mountains and only a little south of the larger cave network. Dexter abandons the plan because of the presence of a bear, but had he gone a little further he might have found the perfect place to dump Matt’s body, along with evidence of Kurt Caldwell’s extensive activities as a serial killer.
