DC Comics is passing on the Wonder Woman mantle to real-world heroes in a new young adult anthology series. There are many roles models out in the world, but not all of them are superheroes with powers. People like Greta Thunberg stand up for what's right, just like what Wonder Woman would do in the comics. These citizens of the world have become role models in their own fields, inspiring new generations to step forward and play their part in creating change.
Wonder Woman is iconic for many other reasons than just her powers. She stands as a symbol for truth, justice, and equality. Wonder Woman's duty as a superhero is to bring justice to the world and tackle the evils that threaten it. She is an equal to her fellow Justice League members, who likewise pursue the collective mission of bringing justice, as the group's name suggests. Therefore, it's incredibly fitting that Wonder Woman's mantle would inspire real-life heroes to become something greater by taking on the iconic role.
The official title for the young adult anthology series is Wonderful Women of the World. DC Comics has announced that they are bringing together an expansive collection of some of the world's most talented creatives to tackle the new series. The project is being spearheaded by New York Times bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson (Wonder Woman: Tempest Tossed), who will serve as editor to the many yet-to-be-announced writers and artists on board. The series will explore tales of real-world superheroes who will take up Wonder Woman's mantle.

The icons that will assume Wonder Woman's mantle include Beyoncé, Serena Williams, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Greta Thunberg, and Malala Yousafzai, among many others. The total number of inspirational women that will be included in the anthology has been numbered twenty-three. These selected heroes will work as Wonder Woman in their own fields, including "the fields of science, sports, activism, diplomacy," to name only a few. Wonder Woman will serve as inspiration for the heroes as DC celebrates both the iconic hero and the roles models, who mean so much for today's generation.
Wonderful Women of the World is a fantastic idea. It sounds like a challenging creative endeavor to come up with fictional stories for these real-world heroes, while also being incredibly important. If DC Comics is able to capture their target audience's attention, it could be a huge deal. Only time will tell if it's successful. Anderson's anthology series will be pegged alongside Wonder Woman's 80th-anniversary celebration of the iconic superhero. Wonderful Women of the World will hit stores on September 28!
