Writer Jonathan Goldstein says that he and his fellow scribes never planned on revisit Uncle Ben’s death in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Following Sam Raimi’s trilogy and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man films, Sony and Marvel Studios’ 2017 reboot, Spider-Man: Homecoming, steered away from rehashing the webslinger’s origin story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This included the decision not to revisit the tragic death of Uncle Ben that represents a key step in Peter Parker’s (Tom Holland) journey to becoming Spider-Man.
Holland's Peter has already been bitten by a radioactive spider when Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) recruits him in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. As subtly as that incident is referenced in Spider-Man: Homecoming, so is Uncle Ben, who seemingly died quite some time before Spider-Man’s MCU debut. Long before the MCU, Ben Parker was famously portrayed by Cliff Robertson in Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man film. And while Martin Sheen did an admirable job with the character in The Amazing Spider-Man, it’s tough to top iconic Spider-Man movie quotes like “with great power comes great responsibility," which was made all the more impactful when Uncle Ben was murdered by a thief in that very first film.
During ComicBook.com’s recent "Quarantine Watch Party" for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Goldstein, who penned the film alongside John Francis Daley and director Jon Watts, spoke about Uncle Ben in the MCU. The screenwriter said that they never planned on revisiting the character’s death in their Spider-Man film. Check out his tweet below:

Spider-Man: Homecoming would’ve likely been deemed derivative had Sony and Marvel decided to rehash plot points that even casual moviegoers are familiar with. Similar to how Warner Bros/DC hasn’t been overly concerned with the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents in their latest iterations of Batman, it’s wise to brush over Uncle Ben’s demise. Even though the character hasn’t appeared or been discussed in the MCU, his absence is felt by Peter/Spider-Man, who looks for a mentor or father figure in seemingly everyone — from Tony Stark and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch).
Thanks to the masterful MCU handling of Spider-Man, the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming threequel, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is easily the most anticipated film of 2021. The film will see Peter ask Doctor Strange to help him make the world forget Spider-Man’s true identity. As seen in the trailers, the subsequent spell goes awry and triggers a crack in the multiverse, bringing multiple former Spidey villains into the MCU. Their return has led many to believe that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men will also make an appearance. Given all this, it's possible that these multiversal antics could resurrect Uncle Ben, and Spider-Man: No Way Home may give fans the Ben appearance that just didn't fit Spider-Man: Homecoming.
