Actor Vin Diesel honors Paul Walker in an emotional post on the eight-year anniversary of his death. The two starred together in several entries of the Fast & Furious franchise, from Rob Cohen's 2001 original The Fast and the Furious to James Wan's Furious 7 in 2015, which featured Walker's final performance. Diesel's involvement in the films continues, with this year's F9 being one of the highest-grossing films of the pandemic era so far.
Walker, who played Brian O'Conner in the Fast & Furious franchise, died in a car accident on November 30, 2013, while in the middle of production on Furious 7. The filmmakers then made a much-publicized pivot to making the project a tribute to their fallen star, completing his scenes using a combination of digital effects and his brothers performing as stand-ins. The emotional heft of the movie's handling of Walker's character propelled it to become the best-reviewed entry of the series to date, and the cast have often spoken about the personal impact of his loss, which has carried through their work as the films have continued.
Now, in honor of the eighth anniversary of his passing, Diesel posts a tribute to his friend and former co-star on Instagram. Earlier this year, Diesel had given Walker's daughter away at her wedding, and he shares an image of her with his own daughter, who served as the Maid of Honor. Including a heartfelt story of advice he received from Walker the day she was born, the actor reaffirms that his friend will always be with him and knows that picture would've made him smile. Check out the original post below:
In Furious 7, the creative team made the decision to have Walker's character retire rather than die, meaning he lives on within the universe of the films. Successive installments have occasionally included references to his current whereabouts as a way of continued remembrance, but the Fast & Furious cast are pushing for Meadow to join them as the franchise nears the conclusion of its main story arc. Ludacris, who plays mechanic Tej Parker in the films, has said he's hearing rumors of her involvement but can only confirm that he and the other stars would love to have her on board.
Diesel's touching post is a good reminder for fans of the personal impact Walker's death had on those who knew him, which makes the films' running theme of family even more relevant. Given that, audiences would surely welcome his daughter into the franchise with open arms, particularly with the Fast Saga nearing its two-part finale. And with Diesel having asked Dwayne Johnson to return after their much-publicized feud saw him depart the main storyline, Fast & Furious looks to be gearing up for an Endgame-style revisiting of its past that could result in the most emotional films yet.
